Journey in the Heavenly City: Exhibition in Memory of Marco Polo

Impression of Venice

Shared by: Zhou Zhen

After a three-hour train ride, a group of people arrived in Venice to reunite with the Domenech family, the messengers of the sea silk road. Venice in summer with a hint of fishy smell, this place has a different kind of feeling. The river is full of speedboats, water buses, water taxis and gondolas, giving the illusion of being in Hangzhou during the Song Dynasty, when there were more than 1,200 bridges in Hangzhou, which is estimated to be more "NICE" than Venice.

Today's task is closely related to Marco Polo. First, we will see his home, then his tomb. Mark Polo was a controversial figure, not to mention whether he came to China or Hangzhou, but he did let the West know about the water city of Hangzhou in the East of the world. After a few paths, we came to a courtyard, somewhat like the old courtyard, where Mark's family flourished, and his uncle was even greater than him, and in fact without his uncle, there would be no story of him. Mark's tomb is in a corner of Venice, resting with his people under the ground of a large church. Standing on the stone bridge next to it, we gazed quietly at his perch and just wanted to say to him: "Here we are, with the joy of Hangzhou, and I hope you feel it too! "

Thousands of years of stories, today reappointment.

Venice re-impression

Venice is very different today, the Chinese and American ambassadors and the mayor of Venice met in the town hall. The Dormé family and our family were dressed in costumes, silk Tang dresses and cheongsams from Hangzhou, China, and after the costumes came the event.

The mayor, Colle, is a woman, dignified and elegant, and I met her in the council chamber of the city hall, a building built in the 16th century, with authentic paintings on the walls, and a modern woman mayor in such a historical and cultural context, as if centuries had passed. In fact, I apologized to the mayor when I talked to her, because Marco Polo came across the sea to visit Hangzhou hundreds of years ago, while we "ambassadors" only came hundreds of years later. The mayor was very kind and it was a good chat.

After the meeting, we started the "Gondola" tour, a boat very much like the West Lake sculling boat, the boatmen are all middle-aged handsome men, each one is the feeling of stars. We met a newlywed couple, a European in their 60s, before we got on the boat, their faces were full of happiness.

The boat weaved through the waterways between lanes, almost jammed to capacity. The neighboring cabins were filled with Chinese tourists: from the Northeast, Hunan, and Guangdong. It felt like a return to China. The boat is very new and bright, no canopy, facing the sun is a bit hot, maybe and Europeans like to sunbathe it.

When I got off the boat and came to the mask museum, there were a lot of masks piled up together, which made people feel a bit afraid. Perhaps modern people are accustomed to "mask life", there will be some discomfort in front of the real mask. The children finished their task quickly, but I wondered when people could put down their masks and be their real selves.

Note: In 2015, Zhou Zhen's family became "Hangzhou Ambassadors" representing Hangzhou's tourism image in the "Hangzhou Ambassador Tour".
